MIAMI — In a surprising turn of events, recreational boaters stumbled upon a significant cocaine haul valued at approximately $1 million floating in the waters off the Florida Keys.

Samuel Briggs II, the acting chief patrol agent of the U.S. Border Patrol, shared details of the discovery in a social media post on X. On Monday night, Briggs posted a video showing the neatly wrapped packages of cocaine being transported on a cart.

"We are grateful for the assistance from the Good Samaritans in our community," he wrote.

In a separate announcement on Facebook, the Monroe County Sheriff’s Office revealed that "boaters on a private vessel located a package containing about 21 individually wrapped kilograms of suspected cocaine.”

The illicit packages were discovered roughly seven miles off the coast of Islamorada, Florida, on Saturday, according to the sheriff's office.

A photo shared by the office displayed one of the packages, which featured an image of a bald eagle.

This significant find underscores the ongoing challenges of drug trafficking in the region and highlights the crucial role of vigilant community members in supporting law enforcement efforts.
