India captain Rohit Sharma has confirmed he will continue playing Test and ODI cricket "for the foreseeable future" following his retirement from T20 internationals after securing a World Cup victory last month. Sharma, who has been on a hiatus since the championship win in the West Indies, is expected to miss the upcoming limited-overs tour of Sri Lanka, which features three ODIs.
The 37-year-old, speaking at an event on Sunday night, said, "As I mentioned before, I don't plan too far ahead. So, you'll definitely see me on the field for some time."
This reiterates his earlier stance made clear after announcing his T20I retirement following India's seven-run victory over South Africa in the West Indies final.
BCCI secretary Jay Shah had earlier confirmed that Sharma would lead India in the current World Test Championship cycle and the Champions Trophy scheduled for February-March next year.
Rohit had captained India in the 2022 T20 World Cup, where the team was eliminated in the semifinals by eventual champions England. A year later, under his leadership, India reached the final of the 50-over World Cup on home soil but were defeated by Australia in Ahmedabad.
Sharma concluded his T20I career with 4,231 runs from 159 matches, including five centuries and 32 half-centuries.
