The Karnataka Transport Department is providing vehicle owners with an extension on the mandatory installation of High-Security Registration Plates (HSRP). The new deadline has been set for September 15, 2024.
This requirement applies to all vehicles across the state, including two-wheelers, three-wheelers, and four-wheelers. Vehicle owners must replace their old license plates with HSRP plates, which feature enhanced security measures to prevent fraud and theft. After the September deadline, the department has indicated that strict actions will be taken against those who do not comply.
This extension is not the first for the HSRP mandate. Initially scheduled for implementation in August 2023, the deadline has been pushed back multiple times. The Karnataka government previously extended the deadline from February 17 to May 31, 2024, due to low compliance rates among vehicle owners.
It is estimated that around 20 million vehicles purchased before April 1, 2019, still need to have HSRP plates installed in Karnataka.
However, the rollout has encountered several issues. Many vehicle owners have reported discrepancies in their registration certificate (RC) details, such as incorrect manufacturer, model, and vehicle type information.
Should the September 15 deadline hold, fines will be imposed on non-compliant vehicle owners. The Transport Department plans to begin enforcement on May 31, with initial fines set at Rs 500, potentially rising to Rs 1000 for repeat offenders.
