In Nagpur's Dighori area, a tragic incident occurred early Monday morning when a car allegedly driven by an intoxicated engineering student veered onto a footpath, killing two women. The accident, which happened at 12:40 am, also left seven others injured, including four children, according to a police official from the Wathoda police station.
The victims, a family who sells toys and resides on the footpath, were asleep when the Hyundai Verna, driven by Bhushan Lanjewar, rammed into them. Lanjewar, along with five inebriated companions, fled the scene immediately after the incident. Police later apprehended him using CCTV footage.
The deceased have been identified as Kantibai Gajod Bagdiya, 42, and Sitaram Babulal Bagdiya, 30. The injured include Kavita Sitaram Bagdiya, 28, and children Balku Sitaram Bagdiya, 8, Hasina Sitaram Bagdiya, 3, Sakina Sitaram Bagdiya, 2, Hanuman Khajod Bagdiya, 35, and Vikram Bhusha Hanuman Bagdiya, 10.
The injured are currently being treated at the Government Medical College & Hospital. Rajendra Babulal Bagdiya, 34, a family member who escaped unharmed, recounted that the family had moved to Nagpur eight months prior. He detailed that the car not only hit them initially but caused further injuries when the driver reversed it.
Bhushan Lanjewar faces charges under various sections of the Indian Penal Code and Motor Vehicles Act, according to the police.
