Priyanka Gandhi Vadra is set to make her electoral debut from the Wayanad Lok Sabha seat in Kerala, following her brother Rahul Gandhi’s decision to retain the Rae Bareli seat in Uttar Pradesh. Rahul, the former Congress president, won both seats in the recent Lok Sabha elections but had to choose one within 14 days as per electoral rules. The deadline for his decision is June 18.

Congress president Mallikarjun Kharge announced the decision at his residence after a lengthy meeting. Rahul Gandhi expressed his emotional connection to both Rae Bareli and Wayanad, stating it was a tough choice. He emphasized his deep ties with Rae Bareli but also his fondness for the people of Wayanad.

Priyanka Gandhi Vadra, addressing her candidacy, assured that she would work diligently for Wayanad and maintain her longstanding connections with Rae Bareli and Amethi, where she has worked for 20 years. If she wins the bypoll, it will mark the first time all three Gandhi family members are in Parliament simultaneously.

Rahul Gandhi reflected on his tenure as Wayanad's MP, appreciating the support he received during challenging times. He mentioned that both Rae Bareli and Wayanad would benefit from having "two MPs" due to his and Priyanka’s efforts.

Regarding the position of Leader of the Opposition in the Lok Sabha, Rahul Gandhi acknowledged Kharge's insistence and hinted at a decision soon. The preceding meeting, attended by key Congress figures including Sonia Gandhi and K.C. Venugopal, thoroughly analyzed the political ramifications of the seat allocation.

Kharge highlighted the historical significance of Rae Bareli for the Gandhi family, noting its importance for the party and the constituency’s loyalty to Congress. Rahul Gandhi’s decision to contest from Rae Bareli follows his mother Sonia Gandhi’s shift to the Rajya Sabha after representing the seat since 2004.

The strategic choice aims to solidify Congress’s alliance with the Samajwadi Party in Uttar Pradesh and bolster the party’s presence in the Lok Sabha with Priyanka’s entry. Congress MP Gaurav Gogoi emphasized the enhanced representation and voice the party will have with both Rahul and Priyanka in Parliament.
