A 32-year-old man, admitted to a hospital in Shahdara, was fatally shot by a young assailant while being treated by doctors, an official reported on Sunday.
The victim, identified as Riyazuddin, was undergoing treatment for an abdominal infection at Guru Teg Bahadur Hospital.
DCP (Shahdara) Surendra Chaudhary provided details, stating that a PCR call reporting a shooting in ward No. 24 was received by GTB Enclave police station. The police promptly responded and arrived at the scene.
"Upon arrival, officers discovered a deceased patient, Riyazuddin, who was admitted on June 23 for abdominal infection treatment," said the DCP.
At approximately 4 pm on Sunday, an 18-year-old male entered the ward and fired multiple shots at Riyazuddin, killing him instantly. The suspect, whose identity remains unknown, quickly escaped the scene.
The police have registered a murder case and initiated a large-scale manhunt to apprehend the suspect.
Delhi Health Minister Saurabh Bhardwaj has ordered a comprehensive security review of all hospitals following the incident. "Negligence will not be tolerated, and those responsible will face severe consequences," the Minister asserted.
According to an official statement from GTB Hospital, no other individuals were harmed during the incident. The SHO of GTB Enclave, ACP, and Crime Branch officers arrived at the crime scene following notification from the Chief Medical Officer on duty.
A nurse, speaking anonymously, recounted that the teenager entered the ward at 3:59 pm, instructed everyone to remain calm, and then revealed a concealed pistol, shooting Riyazuddin before fleeing.
"The sound of the gunshot alarmed those outside the ward, and someone promptly alerted the police," she said. "It was a terrifying experience for everyone present in the ward."
