The tragic incident of suspected food poisoning at Indore's Shri Yugpurush Dham Baudhik Vikas Kendra has resulted in the death toll of children rising to six, according to an interim report issued by a high-level committee. Indore Collector Asheesh Singh confirmed that the number of affected children has increased to 53, all of whom are currently receiving treatment at Government Chacha Nehru Hospital.
A high-level committee, comprising IAS officers and private doctors, was established to thoroughly investigate the incident. The interim report revealed that an additional death occurred on June 29. The investigation also uncovered significant shortcomings in the care provided to the children.
In response, a show-cause notice has been issued to the institution, demanding an explanation within three days regarding why action should not be taken against them. Further steps will be determined based on their response.
Collector Singh reported that 53 children have been admitted to Chacha Nehru Hospital, with 13 expected to be discharged on Thursday. He noted that the death on June 29 was not initially reported to the district administration, and the child's body was handed over to the family without conducting a post-mortem. From June 29 to July 2, a total of six deaths have been reported.
In a separate incident, around 50 army aspirants residing in hostels of a private coaching academy in Indore fell ill due to suspected water contamination. Upon receiving the information, a team of doctors was dispatched to the hostel and found the students suffering from waterborne infections. The affected students, all above 18 years old and preparing for military exams, received treatment either at the hostel or MY Hospital, with all reported to be in stable condition.
Collector Singh stated that water samples have been collected from various locations across the district, including community kitchens and tiffin services. The Municipal Corporation team, along with food safety officers, will conduct investigations and issue notices if any irregularities are detected.
