Kia India has issued a recall for over a thousand units of its EV6 SUVs, specifically those manufactured in 2022-23, due to a potential crash risk stemming from a possible loss of driving power.

The recall has been prompted by a potential defect in the Integrated Charging Control Units (ICCU) of the EV6 electric SUVs worldwide. This fault could prevent the charging of the 12-volt auxiliary battery, leading to its discharge while driving and resulting in a total loss of driving power.

Kia India has assured that the issue can be resolved through a software update. The company will reach out directly to affected customers to address the problem. Additionally, customers are encouraged to contact Kia customer care or visit their nearest dealer for a free inspection and replacement of the fuse if necessary. The software update will also be provided at no cost.

In India, the recall affects 1,138 EV6 models produced between March 3, 2022, and April 14, 2023. In the United States, over 48,232 EV6 units have been recalled, while in Australia, 3,948 units are impacted.

This announcement follows Hyundai’s similar recall of 1,744 units of its Ioniq 5 EV, produced between July 21, 2022, and April 30, 2024, due to an ICCU issue.

In May, Kia introduced a facelifted version of the EV6 crossover globally, featuring significant battery improvements. The updated model now includes an 84kWh unit, an increase of 6.6kWh from the previous version. It supports 350kW DC fast charging, allowing the car to charge from 10% to 80% in just 18 minutes.
