Congress leader Rahul Gandhi got bail in a defamation case filed by a BJP leader. He appeared before a special court in Bengaluru on Friday, responding to a defamation case brought against him by Karnataka BJP MLC Keshav Prasad.
It is said that he signed the bail bond paper and former MP DK Suresh provided the surity to the court worth Rs 75 lakh.
The case stems from allegations that the Congress engaged in propagandistic activities, including publishing full-page advertisements, accusing the previous BJP government in the state of corruption.
The defamation suit filed by Prasad alleges that during the Assembly elections, Siddaramaiah and Shivakumar made false allegations to mislead the people of the state, thereby violating Section 500 of the IPC. Both Siddaramaiah and Shivakumar appeared before the court on June 1st and obtained bail, while Rahul Gandhi, despite giving an undertaking, was absent from the proceedings. Consequently, the counsel for the BJP leader requested a non-bailable arrest warrant against him.
Following his court appearance, Rahul Gandhi is expected to convene a discussion with newly-elected Congress MPs from the state, as well as defeated candidates, at the Bharat Jodo Bhavan.
