At least 29 individuals have died after consuming illicit liquor in Kallakurichi, Tamil Nadu, nearly doubling the initial death toll of 13. This tragic figure was confirmed by Kallakurichi District Collector M.S. Prashanth.

Earlier reports had indicated that the death toll could increase significantly due to the critical condition of several affected individuals.

Around 50 residents of Karunapuram Colony in Kallakurichi taluk were rushed to the government hospital in the early hours of Wednesday. They had consumed spurious liquor sold in packets on Tuesday night. This incident tragically follows a similar event last year when 22 people lost their lives in two separate hooch tragedies in the Villupuram and Chengalpattu districts.
