A police officer from New York City faces serious charges of attempted murder following allegations that he shot another man in what authorities describe as a road rage incident in New Jersey, according to statements by prosecutors.
Hieu Tran, 27, was formally charged on Thursday with attempted murder in the first degree, aggravated assault in the second degree, and possession of a weapon for an unlawful purpose, as detailed in a press release from the Camden County prosecutor.
Tran's legal representative did not immediately respond to requests for comment, while the NYPD confirmed that Tran has been suspended without pay pending further investigation.
The incident unfolded on May 17 around 11 p.m., when officers from the Voorhees Township Police Department responded to a multi-vehicle collision and found a 30-year-old man from Voorhees Township suffering from a gunshot wound. The victim was taken to a local hospital and remains under treatment, according to the prosecutor's statement.
Authorities utilized surveillance footage, mobile phone records, and forensic evidence from the scene, linking Tran to the shooting. The ballistic evidence recovered matched Tran's NYPD-issued firearm, prosecutors reported.
Currently held in New York, Tran awaits extradition to New Jersey. The investigation remains active, with ongoing efforts by the prosecutor's office to gather more information.
