Tragedy struck in Moscow as Russian authorities launched a search operation for the bodies of four Indian students who tragically drowned while swimming in a river. One student, Nisha Sonawane, was fortunate to be rescued but remains in critical condition, according to a statement from the Russian internal affairs ministry.
The four students who lost their lives in the incident have been identified as Jia Pinjari, Jishan Pinjari, Mohammad Yakub Malik, and Harshal Desalei, all hailing from Maharashtra's Jalgaon district, as confirmed by the External Affairs Ministry.
These students were enrolled at the Novgorod State University named after Y Mudryy. Despite search efforts, the bodies of the victims have yet to be recovered, with operations temporarily halted until the morning of June 5, 2024, as stated by Russian authorities.
Jishan and Jia, who were siblings, hailed from Amalner in Jalgaon district, while Harshal Desale belonged to Bhadgaon, also in the same district.
The incident unfolded tragically as Jishan made a video call to his family while the group was in the Volkhov river. Witnessing the perilous situation, family members desperately pleaded with them to exit the waters. Unfortunately, a strong wave swept them away, as recounted by a family member to local media.
In response to the incident, the Indian embassy in Russia issued a cautionary advisory, urging Indians in the country to exercise extreme caution when near water bodies.
The embassy highlighted the recurrence of such unfortunate incidents, emphasizing the need for vigilance. In addition to the recent tragedy, the statement noted two drowning incidents involving Indian students in Russia in 2023, and six in 2022.
Consequently, Indian students in Russia are urged to prioritize safety measures and exercise caution when visiting beaches, rivers, lakes, ponds, and other water bodies, as emphasized by the embassy. This advisory serves as a reminder for students to take necessary precautions to prevent further tragedies.
