The Hubballi-Dharwad Police Force is set to implement stricter measures against drug users by booking individuals found intoxicated with drugs and psychotropic substances under the Narcotic Drugs and Psychotropic Substances (NDPS) Act.
In a press conference on Thursday, Police Commissioner N. Shashi Kumar announced a shift in strategy. While previously focusing on drug peddlers and disrupting supply chains, the police will now also target drug users. They have begun gathering information on individuals consuming drugs or psychotropic substances and plan to take stern action against them.
Commissioner Kumar stated that police officers will now check individuals who appear to be intoxicated. If the presence of drugs is confirmed, the person will be booked under Section 27 of the NDPS Act. He emphasized the police force's commitment to combating the drug menace comprehensively.
To support this initiative, the police have coordinated with KIMS Hospital administration to ensure an adequate supply of drug testing kits for suspected individuals.
In a related development, the Old Hubballi Police seized 1,365 grams of ganja (cannabis) and arrested 12 individuals attempting to sell the banned substance. The arrests took place at a deserted house in Arvind Nagar's P&T Quarters.
During interrogation, the suspects revealed that they typically sold the drugs to members of the Rajasthani community residing in the city. Commissioner Kumar noted that most of the recently seized drugs originated from Rajasthan.

- Karim Jhangirkhan of Mehboob Nagar
In a separate operation, the Cyber, Economic, and Narcotics (CEN) police seized 544 grams of poppy straw and arrested two individuals in connection with the case.
