The attack on Donald Trump during his campaign rally in Pennsylvania has cast a spotlight on what appears to be a significant security lapse, with some critics blaming the Secret Service for allowing the assailant to get through.
Despite the incident, the former president expressed his gratitude to the Secret Service and law enforcement, praising their "rapid response to the shooting that just occurred."
However, questions are being raised, with some labeling the incident a “complete failure” by the Secret Service.
US House Speaker Mike Johnson has pledged that the House will conduct a thorough investigation into the matter.
In a post on X, formerly Twitter, Johnson stated: "The American people deserve to know the truth. We will have Secret Service Director Kimberly Cheatle and other appropriate officials from DHS and the FBI appear for a hearing before our committees as soon as possible."
A spokesperson confirmed to The Hill that the Secret Service has agreed to brief the House Oversight Committee about the attack.
Retired Secret Service Supervisor Bobby McDonald told Reuters, "Trump does receive a very robust protective detail that accompanies him constantly. However, he may not have access to all available assets. This incident will undoubtedly prompt an investigation."
“The Secret Service will now assess what happened and explore ways to further enhance their protective strategies to prevent similar incidents in the future,” McDonald added.
