The United States has commenced the withdrawal of its troops from Niger, as confirmed by a joint statement from the U.S. Department of Defense and the Nigerien Ministry of National Defense.
The process began with the departure of a U.S. Air Force C-17 Globemaster III from Air Base 101 in Niamey on June 7, 2024. Some U.S. forces have already redeployed to their home stations after completing their missions, while a small contingent remains to assist with the withdrawal from Air Bases 101 and 201.
The withdrawal agreement between the U.S. and Niger aims for completion by September 15. This decision follows Niger's transitional government's termination of its military agreement with the U.S. in March 2024, which was initiated after the government cited the interests of the Nigerien people. Currently, approximately 1,100 U.S. personnel are stationed in Niger.
