Ramoji Rao, the visionary leader behind the ETV Network and Ramoji Film City, passed away at the age of 87 in Hyderabad today. He was admitted to Star Hospital in Hyderabad on June 5 due to health complications, including high blood pressure and breathlessness. Despite medical efforts, he succumbed to his illness in the early hours of today.
His mortal remains have been brought to his residence at Ramoji Film City, where numerous political figures and members of the film fraternity are expected to pay their respects.
Prime Minister Narendra Modi expressed deep condolences, describing Ramoji Rao's demise as a significant loss.
Born in 1936, Ramoji Rao spearheaded the Ramoji Group, which boasts the world's largest film production complex, Ramoji Film City. Additionally, he was the driving force behind the widely circulated Telugu-language daily newspaper, Eenadu. The newspaper played a pivotal role in shaping political discourse, particularly during the rise of the Telugu Desam Party (TDP) in the 1980s.
Throughout his illustrious career, Ramoji Rao maintained close ties with influential political figures like NT Rama Rao and Chandrababu Naidu, as well as various luminaries from the film industry. Apart from his media ventures, he also helmed Ushakiran Movies, a renowned production company.
Under his leadership, Ramoji Rao produced an impressive repertoire of over 50 films and telefilms, earning accolades including a National Award and two Filmfare awards. In recognition of his multifaceted contributions to journalism, literature, and education, he was honored with the Padma Vibhushan, India's second-highest civilian award, in 2016.
