Following the recent Lok Sabha election results, the Congress party, which fell just shy of reaching a century in seat count, has received a boost with the addition of another Member of Parliament to its tally.
Vishal Patil, a former Congress member who contested and won as an independent candidate from Maharashtra, has pledged his support to the Congress on Thursday.
With the inclusion of Vishal Patil's support, the Congress's seat count in the Lok Sabha is set to rise to 100, as confirmed by Congress MLA Vishwajit Kadam, who advocated for Patil's cause within the party.
Vishal Patil, hailing from a political lineage as the grandson of former Maharashtra chief minister Vasantdada Patil, emerged victorious from the Sangli constituency in Maharashtra, defeating the BJP's Sanjaykaka Patil.
His decision to contest as an independent candidate stemmed from discontentment over the seat-sharing arrangement within the Maharashtra Vikas Aghadi (MVA) coalition, wherein the Sangli seat was allocated to the Shiv Sena-UBT alliance.
In response to Patil's endorsement, Congress chief Mallikarjun Kharge expressed gratitude, highlighting the victory as a triumph against divisive politics and paying homage to Maharashtra's historical figures advocating for social justice and equality.
The move by the Uddhav Thackeray Sena faction to field its candidate prior to formal seat allocation caused tensions within the Maharashtra opposition alliance, despite repeated pleas from the Congress urging reconsideration.
Following discussions between Vishal Patil, Vishwajit Kadam, and senior Congress leaders including Sonia Gandhi, Rahul Gandhi, and Mallikarjun Kharge, Patil officially pledged his support to the party.
Pending approval from the Lok Sabha secretariat, Vishal Patil is poised to be recognized as an associate MP of the Congress, thereby elevating the party's representation in the Lok Sabha to 100 seats.
Moreover, Pappu Yadav, another independent candidate who secured victory in Bihar's Purnea constituency, is anticipated to extend his support to the Congress. Yadav, who had previously merged his party with the Congress, contested independently after the seat allocation favored the RJD in the Bihar opposition alliance.
The Congress's gain in MP count reflects a significant development in its quest for political consolidation and influence in the Lok Sabha.
