HUBBALLI: The Hubballi-Dharwad Bus Rapid Transit System (BRTS) has reported 43 accidents resulting in 10 fatalities and 33 injuries since its inception in 2019, according to recent data released by the Regional Control Officers of the Hubballi-Dharwad Urban Transport Division. These statistics, covering the period up to July 4, 2024, have raised concerns about safety measures along the rapid transit corridor.
Despite these concerns, the BRTS, locally known as "Chigari," continues to play a crucial role in connecting the twin cities of Hubballi and Dharwad. Launched in 2018, the system was designed to provide swift and efficient transportation between these two major urban centers in Karnataka.
The BRTS boasts 32 bus stations along a dedicated corridor, earning it the nickname "metro on the road." Thousands of commuters benefit from this service daily, taking advantage of its air-conditioned buses equipped with modern amenities such as cameras, audio systems, and LED displays.
To enhance traffic flow, the BRTS route incorporates flyovers at strategic points and traffic lights at major intersections. Over 35 marshals are deployed across various stations to ensure passenger safety and security.
The system has implemented several passenger-friendly features, including dual-sided ticket counters at stations to reduce congestion and smart card options to minimize queuing. Additionally, the project has emphasized environmental sustainability by planting greenery along the corridor, said a press release.
